-Exhibition Text-
(Presentation) When: April 21, 2023
Size: 48 cm x 74 cm
Medium: Two digital concept posters
Competed April 2023
These two concept posters were created utilizing prior industrial design skills taught in order to create a proposed future outdoor classroom design. This is the final phase/concept of our overall designs, and we were tasked with creating an orthographic projection in relation to our final design. With the intention of creating a design that is open and visually engaging.

-Inspiration-
In order to gain a personal perspective on what makes classrooms good and bad, I asked my fellow students what they enjoy and dislike most about our current indoor classrooms. Focusing on what they see, hear, feel, and think about their current inside classrooms. Many fellow students critiqued the classrooms very strongly, one of the most common issues with the classes being lack of personality as well as limited natural lighting. After receiving this feedback, I began brainstorming what the "perfect" class could look like. I wanted to place priority on the lighting and environment, since many stated that their current environment leads them to feel uncomfortable. |
I had later revised these overall opinions, wanting to go deeper with the answers while attempting to find key areas to focus on. These things include:
|
Main Artist Inspiration: Roberto Burle Marx, ESP Business Furnishings
School Furniture, ESP Business Furnishings

Roberto Burle Marx was a famous Brazilian landscape architect. His most famous type of works included his garden designs. A common theme throughout these outdoor designs is contrast with abstract lining and shapes. When I look at these designs I feel like the environment is constantly changing while looking "alive". I wanted to emulate this style of design in order to add a sense of visual engagement for students. This is able to contribute to the hypothetical "personality" of my design, something I wanted to be the main focus.
Similarly I used digital school furniture proposals from ESP Business furnishings to conceptualize my space. This specific design is very spacious with plenty of natural lighting as well. |

-Planning & Experimentation-
Initially, when planning I created a rough design of how I imagined my classroom to look. I created very simple shapes and structures, this helped me better understand the layout and figure out what worked and what didn't. After doing so, I went more in depth during a later class brainstorm. This allowed me to see all of my ideas on a wider scale. Seeing them like this made me want to revise my approach, while ultimately choosing my first design (a lecture hall plus garden/park). This design contains one main large area that branches off into two seating areas. This design was able to display my inspiration while having the optimal amount of seating/shelter I thought would be appropriate. |
After the group brainstorm I created the first version of my design concept. This allowed me to better visualize what I had wanted from my design while being open to critiques as well. I learned to better utilize my space from this planning as well as not making my designs too polished until they are further emphasized.
|
To get a better grasp on designing and its phases I began learning how to map out and draw objects to be proportionally correct. This planning allowed me to experiment with how these types of drawings function, utilizing things like desks as well as my own room to understand better. More specifically when drawing my room it allowed me to better understand how measurement conversions work in a design.

-Process-
Working to be more in depth with my design I chose to focus on the 'main' classroom. I first made a sketch for the overhead of my design in total, taking notes from Marx with the pathways, and then focused on the seating as well as overall measurements. Initially I had made my classroom shelter 40 ft tall, however I realized this would be unrealistic so instead the ideal measurements would be 24 ft X 30 ft. This would allow ample space while not being too unrealistic. For seating I had wanted to emulate a lecture hall while not being too restrictive. In addition to all of this I had also created an orthographic projection of my main classroom, making sure to emphasize it with darker lining. Finally I created my final digital concept design, I was unsure about what the colors would have looked like however I knew I had wanted it to match the overall look and polish with a school. The class itself would contain simple base colors, however the outer areas would be able to show more variety.

-Critique-
When going through the first phase of this project I had taken a large inspiration from Marx, and while this is still present in my final piece it is more turned down as a result of focusing more on spacing as well as seating. Marx was the main inspiration but ESP also allowed me to better visualize the overall use of lighting and how I would shelter it. Unlike the first phase my final piece focuses on one concept instead of multiple. This allows me to better explain my design overall. As a result my final piece shares similarities with my inspirations, however it has become more realistic in what it wants to achieve.
-Reflection-
MIAD Critique: During my critique at MIAD I presented my concept posters while attempting to focus on the "why" of my design and the main classroom. My group said that they had enjoyed my use of "branding" within my concept posters, as well as my overall use of layout when demonstrating how my design would look at Reagan. One thing that I will make sure to add to a future revised design and model is seating. People wished to see how all the seating would look within the main classroom so I will make sure to place emphasis on this aspect. I will also add a more distinct layout with measurements to display how the square footage of my overall concept, since this is what I had mostly focused on during my concept. Overall this experience has piqued my interest in industrial design, and being able to be a part of this opportunity for Reagan is very exciting. I have improved my skills in design as well as presenting concepts.
MIAD Presentation: Presenting my final concept at MIAD was something that had made me somewhat nervous. While we had done this process before this piece was now the refined version of our work. I made sure to state what the problem was (overall space and lighting) as well as how it impacts students. After presenting, a critique I received was to better refine my final digital concept, as it was somewhat difficult to understand without me explaining. This makes sense since I had only focused on the 'main' classroom rather than the overall layout as a whole. If I were to revise this design I would make sure to demonstrate how it would look in the allotted spot at Reagan as well as better structure my concept. I am proud with how my final concept posters came out as well as my overall presentation as well, this part of the process made me realize the importance of emphasis when it comes to a design.
